Elixir
A sustainable infrastructure for interoperability of public biological and biomedical data resources

The use of forefront techniques in the life sciences is generating an extraordinary amount of data, particularly from large-scale DNA sequencing projects. These data sets then need to be properly stored, analysed and shared among researchers, and this requires the availability of databases, software tools, cloud and supercomputer resources, interoperability standards and specialised training. The design, the development and the maintenance of these tools and systems require a common and coordinated effort at national and international level.

The objective of ELIXIR is to address this challenge and to create a European research infrastructure for life science data in order to make it easier for scientists to research and share data, exchange expertise and identify best practices.

ELIXIR-IT is the Italian Node of ELIXIR; its mission is to lead the development of bioinformatics resources in Italy and to integrate them into the pan-European service portfolio of ELIXIR.

UNIMIB is a member of ELIXIR-IT, and is focused on the management and analysis of Big Data in bioinformatics.
