The tax code or “codice fiscale” is an identification code issued by the Ministry of Finance. It is a combination of 16 characters (numbers and letters), which is not a valid form of identity, but without which you won’t be able to rent an apartment, open a bank account or even buy a sim card.

You will be able to request and obtain the Tax identification number - Codice Fiscale directly from the offices of the Agenzia delle Entrate (for the location and contact information of the office of the Agenzia delle Entrate nearest you, please search for your address here. The closest one to the University of Milan-Bicocca, which is in the municipality n° 9, is in via Ugo Bassi, 4/A - 20159 Milano.

Aternatively, you can ask for your tax code in your country while applying to the Italian Embassy/Consulate for a visa. You can also visit the YesMilano One stop shop to ask for it.

Documents required

  • Valid national ID document (such as a Passport).
  • Two copies from your Passport or valid national ID document of your Student Visa and personal data page. 
  • Permesso di Soggiorno OR receipt for Post Office application for Permesso di Soggiorno.
  • Completed application form.
