The PhD Course in Chemical, Geological and Environmental Sciences of the University of Milano Bicocca is peculiar for its multi-disciplinarity and inter-disciplinarity; specific aim of the course is the training to scientific research in the relevant areas, achieved through different activities:
- the development of an innovative research project;
- a learning activity coherent with the research project;
- seminars and intensive courses on the most advanced research topics within the disciplines of the Doctorate.
The course is divided in three curricula: Chemical Sciences, Geological Sciences, and Environmental Sciences. The unique framework of integration of scientific disciplines is implemented thanks to the research facilities made available to the students at the Departments of Earth and Environmental Sciences (DISAT), Biotechnologies and Biosciences (BtBs), and Science of Materials.
The Doctorate in Chemical, Geological and Environmental Sciences has relationship with enterprises and private societies for applied research (industrial Ph.D.) and with other universities abroad for joint programmes.

The main objective of the PhD Course in Chemical, Geological and Environmental Sciences is the development of the capability for planning, organizing, managing and performing research activities in the different research fields covered by the Course.
Each PhD students will be introduced in a research group and trained by a supervisor. Through the cultural exchanges within the research team, the student will achieve the capability for productive collaboration with colleagues as well as for independent working activity.
The multidisciplinary character of the PhD Course will offer to the student the possibility for a continuous contact with different cultural backgrounds, maintaining, in the same time, a high level of specialization in the specific topics of the different curricula.
Courses within the Doctorate in Chemical, Geological and Environmental Sciences are organized each year, with involvement of internationally renowned academic docents affiliated either to the local departments, or to other national and foreign institutes.
For the academic year 2021/2022, over twenty intensive courses have been activated, either transversal to all curricula, or tailored on the most actual themes in the various relevant disciplines.
