Emergency Procedures

In order to reduce the risk of hazardous events occurring, the following preventive measures must be observed:

  • No smoking
  • No use of open flames
  • Do not throw cigarette butts or similar items into bins
  • Do not store flammable materials
  • Do not obstruct emergency exits and escape routes, even temporarily
  • Fire doors without electromagnetic holders must remain closed at all times; they must not be propped open using wedges, paper, bags, waste bins, etc.

Instructions in Case of Specific Emergencies

  • Stay calm
  • Stop your activity and be ready to follow instructions from the emergency team, teacher, or supervisor
  • Leave the room in an orderly manner, using the emergency routes to reach a safe area
  • If there is smoke or fire, cover your mouth and nose with a damp cloth
  • If there is extreme heat, protect your head with damp clothing (avoid synthetic fabrics)
  • If you must go through a closed door, carefully check the top of the door for heat. If it's hot, find another route or open the door cautiously while crouching behind it to avoid a potential fire burst
  • Drop down and protect yourself – ideally under a desk or table
  • Cover the back of your head with your hands, tuck your head between your knees and remain crouched until the shaking stops
  • Stay away from windows, mirrors, and heavy objects that may fall
  • Take cover under sturdy furniture or structural elements (e.g., door frames in load-bearing walls, beams, corners of main walls)
  • Do not go outside during the tremor – falling debris (tiles, chimneys, gutters, balconies) could be dangerous
  • Do not use the stairs, as they are often the most fragile part of a building
  • Avoid using lifts, which may become stuck or lose power
  • Do not use open flames, as gas leaks may occur

After the shaking:

  • Check if others need help – call out to them by name
  • Do not light matches or candles, even in the dark
  • Open windows and doors
  • Exit calmly, avoiding overhead hazards and following escape routes
  • Do not waste time retrieving personal belongings
  • Do not use lifts
  • Help anyone in difficulty
  • Once outside, go to the designated assembly points (indicated by signage), wait for rescue services, report any risks or missing persons
  • Never re-enter the building until it has been declared safe by the relevant authorities
  • Move from lower floors to upper levels without using lifts
  • Do not walk through flooded areas unless you know the depth and layout (e.g., presence of manholes or pits)
  • Do not leave the building if the area is entirely flooded – the current may be dangerous
  • Wait patiently for rescue, clearly signalling your location
  • If possible, use floating objects (e.g., sealed plastic containers, wooden boards, polystyrene)
  • Stay away from areas with electrical equipment, especially if flooded
  • At the first signs, avoid open areas
  • Stay away from tall trees
  • Take shelter in solid buildings and wait for the storm to pass
  • Indoors, move away from windows, doors, and any area where falling glass or furniture is a risk
  • Before exiting a building, check that outdoor conditions and escape routes are safe and clear of debris
  • Do not turn electrical equipment on or off in the affected area; switch off power from the local or main fuse box if safe to do so
  • Avoid any sources of ignition or open flames
  • Ventilate the area by opening windows, then close the door behind you as you leave
  • Breathe calmly; if possible, place a damp cloth over your nose and mouth
  • Stay as far away from the gas source as possible
  • Follow instructions provided via audible or visual alarms (where available)
  • Do not leave your workstation
  • Do not look out of windows out of curiosity
  • Move away from areas aligned with windows, doors, or hanging objects (e.g., chandeliers, pictures, speakers)
  • Remain calm
  • Comfort and support visibly distressed colleagues
  • Wait for further instructions from the emergency response team
  • Do not leave your workstation
  • Do not look through doors out of curiosity
  • If the threat is direct, stay low and still
  • Present the smallest possible target
  • Do not resist or provoke the attacker
  • Remain calm and composed; do not react to verbal abuse and do not mock the individual
  • Move slowly and naturally; avoid sudden or suspicious movements
  • If the threat is not immediate and police intervention is underway, sit or lie on the floor and wait for instructions
  • Anyone who is notified of or suspects the presence of an explosive device must immediately alert the Emergency Operations Centre
  • Follow all alarm signals and evacuation instructions provided by the Coordinator or emergency team

In case of injury or sudden illness:

  • Immediately notify the nearest First Aid Officer or the Emergency Operations Centre (Reception Desk)
  • While waiting for assistance:
  • Do not gather around the injured person
  • Do not provide aid unless trained and authorised to do so
  • Do not move the injured person from their position
