Biography

Paolo Napoletano is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the Department of Informatics, Systems and Communication of the University of Milano-Bicocca since 2021, and he has been Director of the Intelligent Sensing Lab since 2025. He obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor in Information Processing Systems (09/H1) and Computer Science (01/B1) in November 2020 and January 2022, respectively. From 2018 to 2021, he was a tenure-track Assistant Professor (RTDb) of Computer Science at the University of Milan-Bicocca. From 2012 to 2018, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Milan-Bicocca, and from 2007 to 2012, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Salerno. In 2007, he received his PhD in Information Engineering from the​​​​​​​ University of Salerno with a thesis focused on Computational Vision and Pattern Recognition. He earned his five-year degree in Telecommunications Engineering in 2003 from the University of Naples Federico II, with a thesis on electromagnetic field transmission. His main research interests include: Artificial Intelligence, Machine and Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Intelligent Sensing, and Digital Health. He is the author of more than 140 scientific articles in journals and conferences indexed in Scopus. He has been listed in Stanford's ranking of the World’s Top 2% Researchers in Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing from 2019 to 2023. He serves as Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health InformaticsNeurocomputing Elsevier JournalMDPI Sensors Journal and MDPI Smart Cities Journal.  He is member of the ELLIS Society (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems). He is Chair of the IEEE CTSoc Machine learning, Deep learning and AI in CE (MDA) Technical Committee (TC).  He has been Principal Investigator in several research contracts with consumer electronics industries and responsible for research activities in public projects. He is co-founder of the spin-off company Imaging and Vision Solutions. At the University of Milano-Bicocca he teaches Foundations of Deep Learning, Intelligent Consumer Technologies, Internet of Things and Databases.
