On the occasion of the return to Earth of the astronaut Luca Parmitano, the Physics Department of Milan-Bicocca in collaboration with the INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics), organizes an event entirely dedicated to the AMS-02 experiment installed on the Space Station International.
On January 27th, 2020 at 11.50 a.m. the new cooling system of the cosmic particle detector AMS-02 was turned on, so that it could resume its data acquisition activity.
AMS-02 is currently the only instrument in orbit able to distinguish the weak antimatter signals between the different types of particles present in space, thus investigating the nature of dark matter and searching for possible antimatter residues from the origins of the universe.
This operation involved the most complex extra-vehicular activity ever conducted by astronauts in space history.
It was coordinated by astronauts Luca Parmitano (ESA) and Andrew Morgan (NASA).
In connection with Milano-Bicocca, there will be researchers from the Italian laboratories involved in the research program, from Bologna, Perugia, Pisa, Rome and Trento, and colleagues present in the AMS-02 data center at CERN in Geneva.
The event is free admission.
