Professor Francesco Caravenna, a lecturer in Probability and Mathematical Statistics at the Department of Mathematics and Applications of the University of Milano-Bicocca, has been invited to speak at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) 2026.
The International Congress of Mathematicians, which in 2026 will take place in Philadelphia from 23 to 30 July, is held every four years to bring together the global mathematical community and share the latest advances in the field.
"It is a great honor to be invited to the International Congress of Mathematicians, the most important mathematics conference in the world, which every four years brings together the international community to celebrate the most influential results and share recent advances in the field. It will be a special opportunity to present some ideas developed over years of work in probability theory and its connections with other disciplines, both within and beyond mathematics - commented Professor Caravenna - This has also been made possible thanks to a fruitful scientific collaboration with Rongfeng Sun (National University of Singapore) and Nikos Zygouras (University of Warwick): I will deliver a joint presentation with them. I am proud to represent my university in such a prestigious setting."
Professor Caravenna is one of only three mathematicians affiliated with Italian institutions invited to speak at the 2026 edition of the ICM, and the only one from a Milan-based university – an acknowledgement that highlights the quality of research conducted at the University of Milano-Bicocca.
His research focuses on probability theory and its applications, particularly in statistical mechanics, stochastic equations, and random walks. He has served on the editorial boards of Annales de l’Institut Henri Poincaré (2018–present) and the Annals of Applied Probability (2019–2024), and was awarded the Fubini Prize in 2011.
