Biography
Michele A. Riva, MD, PhD is a Full Professor of the History of Medicine at the University of Milano-Bicocca, a position he has held since 2024. He is a specialist in Occupational Medicine and has served as the head of the Medical Service of the University since 2018.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Milano-Bicocca in 2006 and specialized in Occupational Medicine at the same institution in 2011. Since then, he has worked as a medical doctor and specialist in Occupational Medicine at the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza.
In 2016, he obtained a PhD in Medical Humanities from the University of Insubria. He was an Assistant Professor from 2017 to 2020 and an Associate Professor of the History of Medicine from 2020 to 2024 at the University of Milan-Bicocca. During this time, he also held clinical responsibilities at the Monza Hospital.
Since March 2023, he has been the Director of the Department of Occupational Health at the Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori.
Michele A. Riva is a member of several national and international scientific associations, including SISM, SIMLII, AIRM, and ICOH. He served as Chair of the Scientific Committee on the History of Prevention of Occupational and Environmental Diseases of ICOH from 2009 to 2015 and has been the National Secretary for Italy of ICOH since 2021. Additionally, he was a board member of the Association of Occupational Medicine of Lombardy from 2015 to 2018 and served on the Board of the Italian Society of the History of Medicine (SISM) from 2019 to 2022.
From 2015 to 2024, he was a member of the Board of the Medical and Dental Surgeons Association of the Province of Monza and Brianza.
Since 2022, he has been the Director of the Specialization School in Occupational Medicine at the University of Milan-Bicocca. He is on the Editorial Board of the journal Medicina Historica and the National Advisory Board of La Medicina del Lavoro. He also serves as a reviewer for several scientific and medical history journals.
Research
Michele A. Riva has over 350 publications to his name, including scientific articles, books, and book chapters, in the fields of the history of medicine, occupational medicine, and public health. His primary research areas include the history of occupational medicine and public health, the history of epidemiology and paleoepidemiology, and the history of neuroscience.
He represents the Department of Medicine and Surgery on the Scientific Committee of the Interdepartmental Research Center “ASPI - Historical Archive of Italian Psychology: Research and Documentation Center on the History of Mind Sciences” and the Bi-PAC - Interdepartmental Research Center on Historical, Artistic, and Cultural Heritage, both at the University of Milan-Bicocca. He is also a member of the Center for Research in Clinical Ethics (CREC) at the University of Insubria.
He has published in some of the most prestigious international medical journals, including The Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, and Neurology.
