Marina Calloni has always sought to integrate multidisciplinary and intercultural research activities with interactive teaching and training methods, pursuing an international perspective while maintaining a strong focus on local realities. Her work primarily covers political theory, human rights advocacy, and gender issues.

Current Position

  • Since 2002: Full Professor of Political and Social Philosophy at the Department of Sociology and Social Research, University of Milano-Bicocca. She was appointed following the national competition for the repatriation of Italian scholars working abroad (recruited for renowned merit).

Academic Qualifications

  • 1985: Ph.D. in Philosophy, University of Pavia.
  • 1992: Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences, European University Institute, Florence.

Honors

  • 2020: Awarded the title of "Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic", a recognition conferred by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

  • Since 2024: Coordinator of the “Theories, Cultures and Politics” Unit, Silkway International Network on Human Rights and Sustainability.

  • 2024: Academic representative for Italy in a hearing with the Council of Europe’s GREVIO as Director of UN.I.RE. (Italian University Network against Gender Violence).

  • 2023–2025: Principal Investigator, PRIN Project “Democracy and Wellbeing in Times of Emergency” (with Sapienza, Cagliari, LUISS).

  • Since 2019: Director, UN.I.RE. – Italian University Network for the Implementation of the Istanbul Convention. Recognized in 2022 by the Council of Europe as the first academic network on the topic among the 46 member states.

  • Since 2013: Director, ADV – Against Domestic Violence research center (previously EDV Project), the first Italian university center against domestic violence, co-founded with Baroness Patricia Scotland and writer Simonetta Agnello Hornby.

  • 2019–2021: Coordinator, Race and Education Project – on Italian Racial Laws (1938), exhibition and e-book inaugurated by Senator for Life Liliana Segre.

  • 2004–2019: Unit Coordinator for various MIUR-funded PRIN projects on genocide, humanitarianism, asylum seekers, and political imagination.
