Marina Calloni has always sought to integrate multidisciplinary and intercultural research activities with interactive teaching and training methods, pursuing an international perspective while maintaining a strong focus on local realities. Her work primarily covers political theory, human rights advocacy, and gender issues.

Current Position

  • Since 2002: Full Professor of Political and Social Philosophy at the Department of Sociology and Social Research, University of Milano-Bicocca. She was appointed following the national competition for the repatriation of Italian scholars working abroad (recruited for renowned merit).

Academic Qualifications

  • 1985: Ph.D. in Philosophy, University of Pavia.
  • 1992: Ph.D. in Political and Social Sciences, European University Institute, Florence.

Honors

  • 2020: Awarded the title of "Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic", a recognition conferred by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

  • From 2024: Coordinator of the "Theories, Cultures, and Politics" Unit for the international Silkway network, comprising universities, institutions, and private companies, focusing on sustainability and the green transition.
  • 2023: Principal Investigator (P.I.) for the PRIN project titled: "Democracy and Wellbeing in Times of Emergency."
  • 2024: Member of the Equal Opportunities Observatory at the University of Milano-Bicocca, appointed by the rector.
  • 2023: Member of the interdisciplinary working group at the National Observatory of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI).
  • Since 2022: Member of the scientific committee for the "No Women No Panel" project, funded by RAI for Sustainability, and presenter of the book When Women Count with RAI President Mariella Soldi at the 2023 Turin International Book Fair.
  • 2021-2023: Head of network evaluation and guideline development for the U.O.MO Project (Men, Orientation, and Monitoring) to create an effective system for handling and monitoring male perpetrators of violence, aiming to reduce recidivism. The project, funded by the Lombardy Region, was managed by ATS (Health Protection Agency) of the Metropolitan City of Milan, in collaboration with CIPM, Fondazione Somaschi, Cooperativa Sociale Dorian Gray, and SAVID Service.
  • Since 2022: External affiliate at the Center for Italian Studies, University of Notre Dame (Indiana, USA).
  • Since 2020: Director of the "Democracy" working group for the Excellence Project of the Department of Sociology and Social Research.
  • Since 2020: President of the "Philosophy" section for the 100Esperte project – 100 Women Against Stereotypes, supported by Fondazione Bracco, GIULIA Giornaliste, and the Pavia Observatory.
  • Since 2019: Principal Investigator (P.I.) and coordinator of the UN.I.RE. Academic Network (Universities in Network Against Violence) consisting of Italian and European universities implementing the Istanbul Convention in collaboration with the Council of Europe, the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on Femicide, the Ministry of Universities and Research, the Ministry of Equal Opportunities and Family, the Italian University Rectors Conference, the National University Council, ANVUR, and the European Parliament.
  • In 2022, UN.I.RE. was recognized by the Council of Europe (Strasbourg) as the first Academic Network among the 46 member states involved in implementing the Istanbul Convention, serving as a model for other European universities (as noted by GREVIO) under the OCEAN project.
  • Since 2013: Director of the department's research center ADV – Against Domestic Violence (formerly EDV Project), the first university center in Italy dedicated to combating domestic violence.
  • Since 1995: Researcher on the history of anti-fascism and Jewish intellectual women, publishing previously unpublished works related to the Giustizia e Libertà movement, the Rosselli family, and Amelia Rosselli, the mother of Carlo and Nello Rosselli.
  • 2019-2021: Coordinator of the university project Race and Education: The 1938 Anti-Jewish Laws, overseeing the creation of the website and the e-book of the same name (available at https://razzaeistruzione.unimib.it/).
  • 2016-2019: Projects supporting Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad’s campaign for the Yazidi people, against the crimes of Daesh/ISIS.
  • 2004-2019: Responsible for PRIN (Projects of National Interest) research funded by the Ministry of Education, on topics including genocide, war crimes, humanitarianism, and collective memory.
  • 2014-2016: P.I. for projects on the right to food at Milan EXPO 2015.
  • 2010-2012: Lead researcher on refugee issues in Italy, in collaboration with UNHCR, supporting university students seeking asylum.

  • Since 2002: Professor of Political Philosophy at the Department of Sociology and Social Research.
  • 2024: Director of the interdisciplinary and intraprofessional training course "Multi-Target Training on Male Violence Against Women" for the Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta.
  • Since 2018: Instructor of the course "Training Social Workers to Combat Gender-Based Violence," funded by the Lombardy Region and supported by five departments (Sociology and Social Research, Medicine and Surgery, Psychology, Human Sciences for Education "Riccardo Massa," and Business and Law).
  • 2019-2020: Director of the SFERA project (Development of Training for Anti-Violence Networks), funded by PoliS - Lombardy Region, in agreement with professional associations, for the ongoing training of law enforcement (carabinieri and State Police), municipal police, psychologists, social workers, journalists, volunteers and operators at anti-violence centers, healthcare personnel, educators and teachers, court-appointed technical consultants, and independent consultants, aimed at preventing and combating gender violence. The 2021-2022 edition planned to train 1,800 professionals.
  • 2017-2020: Director of a postgraduate course on "Violence Against Women and Minors: Understanding and Combating the Phenomenon."
