Biography

Marco Rotiroti holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences (2013) from the University of Milano-Bicocca and, in the same institution, he continued his research as a post-doc fellow for the following seven years. Since 2020 he is an Assistant Professor in hydrogeochemistry at the University of Milano-Bicocca. His research efforts cover the hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry fields, primarily aiming at a sustainable management of the quantity and quality of groundwater resources. Tracking the geochemical evolution of groundwater along flowpaths represents at present days his main scientific interest, together with investigations on nitrate and arsenic pollutions, natural background levels, contaminated sites, groundwater/surface-water interaction, groundwater dating, impacts of climate change on groundwater resources, groundwater flow and reactive transport modelling. He teaches Environmental Geochemistry and the lab classes within the Groundwater Pollution and Remediation course within the master’s degree of Geological Sciences and Technologies; moreover, he teaches Isotopes as Environmental Tracers in the PhD course in Chemical, Geological and Environmental Science. He is also actively involved in the Italian Chapter of IAH, before within the Early Career Hydrogeologist's Network and since 2022 at the board of the National committee, contributing to the science of groundwater and undertaking outreach, education and training.

Research

His research interests cover hydrogeology and hydrogeochemistry aiming at supporting a sustainable management of the quantity and quality of groundwater resources. His research activities focus on the geochemical evolution of groundwater along flowpaths, groundwater pollution by nitrate and arsenic, natural background levels, contaminated sites, groundwater/surface-water interaction, groundwater dating, impacts of climate change on groundwater resources, groundwater flow and reactive transport modelling.
