Biography

Lorenzo Giovanni Mantovani, MSc (Econ), DSc (Epi), FESC 

I am currently Full Professor of Public Health at the School of Medicine and Surgery  of the University of Milano-Bicocca, where I am Director of Center for Public Health Research, Dean of Postgraduate School of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine  and Coordinator of the PhD Program in Public Health Epidemiology, Statistics and Economics. I am Director of the Public Health Unit at IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano Research and Teaching Hospital in Milano, Italy. 

I hold a Master of Science in Economics and Social Sciences, Bocconi University of Milan (I) and a Doctorate in Epidemiology, Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences, Erasmus Medical Center, Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (NL).

With three decades of experience in the safety, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness evaluation of health technologies and services, I currently lead a multidisciplinary team of approximately 65 individuals, including 3 Associate professors and 3 senior researchers (all with tenure), 25 physicians residents in Public Health and Preventive Medicine, 30 PhD students, 3 post-doc, 2 adjunct professors.

Member of the Independent Steering Committees of Xamos, Xalia and Cosimo, Global Post Marketing Surveillance studies required by the European Medicines Agency  as part of the  Risk Management Plan of the drug rivaroxaban, I also serve in the Steering Committee of the Garfield-AF and Garfield-VTE global registries. Since 2019 I hold the honorific title of FESC - Fellow of  European Society of Cardiology, awarded for scientific excellence.

I have been advisor to several entities of the Italian National Health Service, including Hospital Trusts, Local and Regional Health Authorities and the Italian Ministry of Health. I have been (2019-2022) Director of the Value-Based Healthcare Unit at IRCCS Multimedica Research and Teaching Hospital, Milan, Italy.

Multiple scientific and service award recipient, I have chaired  the VIII European Annual Meeting of the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (more than 800 abstract, more than 1400 delegates), Firenze, 6-8 November 2005; the 25° EuroQoL Group Annual Meeting,  Baveno (I) 11-13 September 2008, and XVIII European Annual Meeting of the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (2500 abstracts, 5.200 delegates), Milan, 7-11 November 2015, at that time the largest outcomes research congress ever.

Past (2003-2008) field-Editor (field “pharmacoeconomics”) of the journal “Pharmacological Research” (IF 2021 10.33), I am currently member of the Editorial Board of “Bleeding Thrombosis and Vascular Biology” and Section-Editor-in-Chief (section “preventive medicine”) of the journal “Healthcare” (IF 2021 3.16).

I have co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed articles, including papers published in top journals including Blood, Circulation, JACC, European Heart Journal, Lancet, Lancet Hematology, JAMA Cardiology, Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, JAMA Oncology, Thrombosis Research, Hepatology, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Allergy, European Journal of Cancer, Pharmacological Research, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Public Health. Impact Factor: >3000; Hirsch Index: 75 (Scopus); ; Citations: >75.000 (Scopus).

I have played basket for 17 years as a point guard, starting-five for 14 years. Our team won back-to-back National Championships at high-school level in the 80's.
