Biography

Gianfranco Parati, MD, a specialist in Cardiology and in Internal Medicine, currently serves as Full Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine and Surgery, University of Milano-Bicocca, and as Scientific Director of the Istituto Auxologico Italiano, IRCCS, Milan, Italy. He is also Head of the Cardiology Unit and Head of the Department of Cardiovascular, Neural and Metabolic Sciences at St. Luke Hospital, Istituto Auxologico Italiano, IRCCS,  Milan.  Prof. Parati is Director of the Postgraduate School of Specialization in Cardiovascular Diseases, University of Milano-Bicocca.  

Prof. Parati is Honorary Professor at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, Lima, Peru.

EDITORIAL ACTIVITY: Executive Editor of the Journal of Hypertension, Associate Editor of Hypertension Research, member of the Editorial Board of several International Cardiovascular Journals.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of arterial hypertension, blood pressure measurement, blood pressure variability, sleep, and sleep-related breathing disorders, cardiovascular effects of altitude exposure (HIGHCARE PROJECTS on the Alps, Himalaya/Mount Everest, and Andes), arterial wall properties and arterial stiffness, space research on microgravity (NASA, ESA), telemedicine, digital and mobile health technologies, validated application for smartphones, cardiac imaging.

MEMBERSHIP: Member of European Society of Cardiology (ESC), European Society of Hypertension (ESH), International Society of Hypertension (ISH), Italian Society of Hypertension (SIIA), Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC). Nucleus member and Treasurer of the Council on Hypertension of the ESC, Chairman of the Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring of SIIA, and Secretary General and Executive Board member of the World Hypertension League. Honorary Member of the Latin American Society of Hypertension (LASH), Venezuelan Society of Cardiology, Venezuelan Society of Hypertension, Peruvian Society of Cardiology, Polish Hypertension Society, British and Irish Hypertension Society.

Prof. Parati is past President of the SIIA, past President of the Foundation of the SIIA, past Chairman of the Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring and Cardiovascular Variability of the ESH, Fellow of the ESC. Prof. Parati is a regular invited speaker at annual ESC, ESH, EACP, LASH, SIC, SIIA scientific meetings

AWARDS:  2004 Lecturer of the Year (Belgian Universities and Belgian Hypertension League), 2005 Forum P.A. (Forum Pubblica Amministrazione) award excellence in Health Care Services endorsed by the Italian Ministry of Health for Telemedicine in Heart Failure. 2015  ESH  “Bjorn Folkow Award and Lecture” for excellence in research on Hypertension pathophysiology.  2019  Pickering Lecture Award at the British and Irish Hypertension Society Annual Meeting.
