The University of Milano-Bicocca will host the closing conference of the CoARA Working Group TIER – Towards Inclusive Evaluation of Research. Coordinated by the University, TIER is an international thematic working group established to identify biases in research assessment processes, with a particular focus on gender bias, and to develop possible mitigation strategies.
Over its three years of activity, TIER has benefited from contributions from numerous Italian and international institutions belonging to the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA), developing recommendations and practical guidance to improve assessment processes.
The group has analysed the scientific literature and numerous case studies from Italy and abroad. It has also conducted surveys among staff and key stakeholders at academic institutions, research organisations and funding agencies, exploring various aspects of research assessment, perceptions of these processes and opportunities for improvement.
One of the project’s main outputs is an open-access online toolkit. The tool goes beyond a purely theoretical approach, offering recommendations and concrete actions to make assessment processes more inclusive and more responsive to gender disparities. The toolkit provides tailored pathways based on users’ profiles and needs and generates a self-assessment document to help them identify the most appropriate actions to put into practice.
