Biography

Davide Cino is Assistant Professor of General and Social Pedagogy at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Italy). His research focuses on digital parenting, children’s media use, lifelong learning, and informal education. He is the Principal Investigator of DigiPE (“Digital Parenting Ecologies: Evolving Landscapes of Parenting and Caregiving Practices in the Age of Digital Media and Generative Artificial Intelligence”), funded by the Italian Science Fund (Fondo Italiano per la Scienza – FIS 3). DigiPE investigates the mechanisms through which parents learn and negotiate knowledge related to parenting and caregiving within digital ecosystems, particularly through digital media and generative artificial intelligence systems. Combining a national survey, qualitative interviews, and digital ethnography, the project explores contemporary parents’ experiences from pregnancy through early childhood (0–8 years).

He earned his PhD at the University of Milano-Bicocca. His doctoral research on sharenting, conducted in Italy and the United States (Northwestern University), received awards from the International Communication Association and the Swiss Association of Communication and Media Research, and his monograph Sharenting won the 2024 Premio Italiano di Pedagogia (SIPED). He later worked as a postdoctoral researcher on two Horizon 2020 projects –ySKILLS and CO:RE– collaborating with international teams investigating young people’s digital skills, online experiences, and non-formal learning. Since 2023, he has served as Assistant Professor at the University of Milano-Bicocca and has been involved in the PNRR Age-It research program, studying older adults’ everyday life transitions. His expertise lies at the intersection of social pedagogy, family studies, and media studies. Across his research, he adopts an interdisciplinary lens and works with qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches.

He is a member of EU Kids Online, contributing to international research on childhood, parenting, and digital media, with particular attention to children’s online engagement, risks, and opportunities. He is also affiliated with the Center for Educational Changes and Potentials in the Digital Transition (University of Milano-Bicocca), the Center for Educational Studies on Children and Families (University of Bologna), the Children’s Digital Media Center (UCLA), and the Center on Media and Human Development (Northwestern University). He has been a Visiting Scholar at Northwestern University and an independent visiting researcher at UCLA/California State University, Los Angeles, and the Complutense University of Madrid. He has also held research and teaching positions at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Milan), the University of Bergamo, and the University of Padova.

He is Managing Editor of the Journal of Transformative Education (SAGE), serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Children and Media (Taylor & Francis) and Ricerche di Pedagogia e Didattica, and is a member of the scientific committee of the book series Educazione e Digitale (Anicia). He has authored and co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, two monographs, more than 45 peer-reviewed conference presentations, and 13 research reports, and has been an invited speaker at several academic and outreaching events.

Beyond academia, he engages public audiences through podcasts, interviews, and a documentary (She, Othello), and has appeared in outlets including Vanity Fair, Il Sole 24 Ore, La Stampa, and Il Fatto Quotidiano.

About DigiPE

DigiPE is a five-year research project funded by the Italian Science Fund (Fondo Italiano per la Scienza – FIS 3). It investigates how parents acquire knowledge, learn strategies, and (co-/de-)construct pedagogical and cultural models related to their role, caregiving responsibilities, and children’s growth and wellbeing through digital ecosystems made up of apps, websites, social media platforms, and generative artificial intelligence tools. Conceptualizing these environments as everyday spaces of informal learning, the project examines both the epistemic processes through which parents acquire, evaluate, reinterpret, and co-construct knowledge about parenting, and the deontic dynamics through which normative and neoliberal models of “good” parenting are reinforced, negotiated, or contested across different practices of digital content consumption and production.

Adopting a systemic perspective and a mixed-methods design combining a national survey, longitudinal qualitative interviews, and digital ethnography, DigiPE explores contemporary parents’ learning experiences during the transition to parenthood and throughout early childhood (0–8 years). Expected outcomes include research-based theoretical frameworks on the formation of parenting knowledge and identity; open-access resources for parents and professionals in education and healthcare; recommendations for the development of more ethical and inclusive digital environments; and increased public awareness of the role of digital media and generative artificial intelligence in contemporary caregiving practices.
