Ghemon, Santi Francesi and Gaia at the 2024 Bicocca Music Festival

Tuesday, 30 April 2024

The Bicocca Music Festival is back, a music festival conceived and promoted by the University of Milano-Bicocca for the academic community and the local area. Now in its third year, the festival will be held from Monday 27 to Friday 31 May. A week of events, during which famous and emerging artists and bands will bring their music to the campus and the Bicocca district. There will also be talks and food trucks, all with an emphasis on sustainability and inclusiveness.

On 27th May, the event will be opened by singer-songwriter Gaia: the winner of the 19th edition of “Amici di Maria De Filippi” will meet the University’s students for a journey suspended between words and music, retracing her artistic journey through her best-known songs in an event moderated by radio journalist Fulvio Giuliani (Aula Magna, 11 am, Piazza dell’Ateneo Nuovo 1, Milan).

In the afternoon, the 2024 Bicocca Music Festival will see the opening of an exhibition on the world of radio: “Scrivere nel vento. Cento anni di radio tra società, industria, tecnologia. Che storie!(Writing in the wind. One hundred years of radio: society, industry, and technology.
What stories!), a narrative journey promoted by the Museo delle Industrie e del Lavoro Saronnese (MILS), FERROVIENORD and FNM (spaces adjacent to the Aula Magna, 5.30 p.m., Piazza dell’Ateneo Nuovo 1, Milan).

In the evening (Auditorium “Guido Martinotti”, 9 p.m., Via Vizzola 5, Milan) the Orchestra of the University of Milano-Bicocca, conducted by Yakov Zats, will perform. It will perform Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77,  with the special participation of violinist Roberto Cani, and Symphony No. 3 op. 56, known as the ‘Scottish’, by Felix Mendelssohn.

On Tuesday 28 May, the music will continue with a concert by the Choir of the University of Milano-Bicocca, conducted by Alessandra Zinni (Auditorium “Guido Martinotti”, 9 p.m., Via Vizzola 5, Milan).

Events scheduled for 29 May include the Piano Marathon “Nel silenzio c’è musica” (There is music in silence), a silent concert open to amateur pianists from the academic community and the local area (Biblioteca d’Ateneo, 2-7 p.m., Piazza dell’Ateneo Nuovo 1, Milan) and the Concert of the University of Milano-Bicocca Guitar Orchestra, in Monza (Manzoni 16, Spazio Eventi, 6 pm, via Manzoni 16, Monza), followed by a free aperitif.

The third day will end with the Santi Francesi, the duo composed of Alessandro De Santis and Mario Francese, who will talk to Andrea Laffranchi, journalist and music critic for Corriere della Sera, and perform a short acoustic set in an event that will also involve students and the public (Aula Magna, 9 p.m., Piazza dell’Ateneo Nuovo 1, Milan).

On Thursday 30 May, artist Ghemon will perform “Una cosetta così”, the new show that combines music, stand-up comedy and storytelling on the same stage. A show consisting of shared personal stories intended to be seen through the lens of irony, unreleased songs, unexpected covers and more profound reflections (Aula Magna, 9 p.m., Piazza dell’Ateneo Nuovo 1, Milan).

The final day of the Bicocca Music Festival (31 May) will open with the “Arcobaleno della Salute” (Rainbow of Health) event at the Sarca Shopping Centre (from 3.30 to 6.30 p.m., Via Milanesi 10, Sesto San Giovanni), a journey to discover the meaning of a ‘rainbow’ diet, which is useful for growing and staying healthy at all ages. This will be followed by the traditional final concert, for this edition hosted in the Amphitheatre of the Cassina Anna garden (via Sant’Arnaldo 17, Milan): soloists and music groups, consisting of Milano-Bicocca students, lecturers and staff, will take turns on the stage en plein air, from 7.30 p.m. to 11 p.m., in a musical journey that will range from pop to reggae, electronic. rock, new wave and hip hop. A number of food trucks will also be present in the courtyard of the Cassina Anna amphitheatre.

For the final evening and for other performances that will be scheduled from day to day within the University, at the Milan and Monza sites, and at the Sarca Centre (Sesto San Giovanni), the University of Milano-Bicocca is launching a call until 3 May aimed at students, lecturers, researchers, research fellows and employees of the University, and their families, who would like to play and sing in the context of the Festival.
