PhD School and Enterprise Collaboration

The mission of the PhD School is to develop synergies between the University and Enterprises (profit or non-profit Organizations). The Milano-Bicocca PhD School encourages collaborations among the University, the local production system and society as a whole, in order to develop innovative paths aimed at expanding PhD students’ skills and their career opportunities and at promoting the transfer of research results. Possible forms of collaboration between the University and Enterprise are:

  1. PhD Executive
  2. High-Level Training Apprenticeship PhD
  3. Funding of a PhD scholarship

Tax benefits are foreseen for Enterprises that make a donation to universities (e.g. by funding a scholarship) or that activate an Executive PhD position reserved for their employees. Special tax benefits are granted to Enterprises which hire a PhD student with a High-Level Training Apprenticeship contract.

PhD executive

The Milano-Bicocca PhD School promotes the possibility to activate PhD positions dedicated to Enterprises’ employees. It is also available for self-employed collaborators with a work contract covering the duration of the PhD course. The University, together with the Enterprises, defines a personalized training project that includes attendance of PhD courses at the University and development of the research activity.

High-level training apprenticeship PhD

The High-Level Training Apprenticeship PhD allows Enterprises to hire a young graduate (under 29 years old) through an apprenticeship contract, who will work in the Enterprises and carry out a research project of common interest. Training periods in the Enterprises and at the University are specified in the contract, as well as the PhD course to be attended.

PhD Scholarship

All types of Enterprise can collaborate with the PhD School on research topics of common interest by funding scholarships that will be announced in a public call. This option is available for both Companies which have and do not have an R&D unit. To sponsor a scholarship, it is not necessary for an Enterprise to have an already defined project. The project can be either designed by the University or co-designed with the Enterprise. The scholarship holder will be a full-time PhD student who will carry out a research project at the University and at the Enterprise’s premises. Once the student gets a PhD degree, the Enterprise will be offered the opportunity to hire him/her.
